Abstract

summary: in austria like in many other industrialized countries, in average womens earnings amount only for two third of that of men. what are the reasons for this empirical evidence? by using earnings-functions which are based on the human capital approach, on the theory of compensating wage differentials and on the dual labour market theory and which were estimated by data from the austrian microcensus, the wage gap between men and women is split up. the results show how much of the wage gap can be explained by differences in productivity and on the other hand by discrimination in the labour market. as it turns out, one of the most important factors behind the female-male differential in earnings is the sex-related division of labor within the family.;
