abstract: part one of the paper deals with status and development of female labor force participation in west germany and austria . a second part reviews the main theoretical approaches concerning women's work participation. part three presents the results of some empirical work based on mass-data for the two countries. the aims of the paper can be summarized as follows: general introduction to the discussion of female labor force participation, structural analysis of women's work participation in the two countries and a comparison of the structures, application of new statistical methods (multivariate-contingency-table-analysis, logistic regression) in this context.;
