abstract: the author presents a summary of income inequalities between women and men in eight european countries: west germany, austria, netherlands, italy, sweden, france, great britain and luxembourg. besides that a presentation of those legal rules wich ought to prevent income discrimination of women is given. a special part of the paper shows the situation in socialist countries - since representative data are not available - a direct comparison with western countries is not possible. a last chapter deals with detailed data analysis.;
