Abstract
summary: the task of this paper is to analyse the discrepancy in economic development of the nine federal states of austria. at the present level of the austrian regional statistics it is first necessary to give a general view of the data existing. following this is a brief survey of the theoretical approaches of regional economics and their value for practical applications is discussed. afterwards the methods of empirical regional economics are described with special regard to the data situation in austria. we conclude that the shift and share analysis is an appropriate tool to analyse the different rates of growth of gross inland product and to distinguish between a locational and structural effect. as a result the development of the regional effect for the federal states and their economic sectors is described. finally the development over time of the regional effect of the industrial gross inland product per industry worker is shown.;
