Abstract
Abstract: According to a variety of contributions traffic participation is conceptualised as a type of social activity taking place within a complex socio-economic environment. Little attention has been paid, however, to the meaning of postmaterialistic value orientations and environmental consciousness for the individual choice of travel modes. Ecological value orientations, attitudes and knowledge can be assumed as constitutive for conscious ecological activities. Due to this hypothesis the concept of "Environmental Learning" aims at the strengthening of the individual conditions favourable for conscious ecological activities in all dimensions of value orientations, attitudes, knowledge and practical experience with ecological alternatives of behaviour. A three-step investigation (1. Analysis, 2. Intervention, 3. Evaluation) will explore the effectiveness of "Environmental Learning" for the choice of individual travel modes to and back from work. Following the design of an explorative pilot-study the whole design of the investigation will be applied to a few selected and internationally comparable firms.;
