Abstract

Next year, one of Europe’s most remarkable research funders will celebrate its 10th anniversary. The European Research Council was born with the seventh edition of the Framework programme for research. Today, it is such a fixture of the research funding landscape that it is difficult to imagine life without it. Yet even for its most fervent advocates, the ERC’s inception was so unexpected that it felt almost miraculous.
