Abstract

summary: the present research report investigates the occupational and sectoral differentiation of the employed population of austria under the perspective of class formation and social stratification. it employs for the first time in a systematic manner the method of cluster analysis. the results show that the division of labor in regard to occupations and industrial sectors is structured sharply along those lines which can be deduced from the theory of social stratification. the findings prove also the utility of the method of cluster analysis as a tool for the investigation of social structures. analyses related to the status consistency of occupational and sectorial groupings to their position in regard to social deprivation or privilege and to the development of the class and status structure in austria between 1951 and 1973 supplement these findings.;
