Abstract

summary: in this paper, an attempt is made to evaluate the contribution of the educational expansion in austria since the thirties in changing the structures of social inequality and the processes of status attainment. in the first part, the two most general hypotheses concerning this problem - education as a primary factor of social change vs. education as a mechanism reproducing social inequality - are discussed and evaluated critically. the data base for the empirical analyses comes from an austrian microcensus survey on life-time occupational careers of the employed population in 1972. the results obtained by log-linear models show that the educational expansion (which was mainly an expansion of apprenticeship) had important consequences for changes in the composition of certain social strata. these results show also that educational growth was not able to change the mechanisms of status attainment and the inequality in educational and occupational opportunities in any fundamentalway.;
