Abstract
summary: based upon a one year anthropological observation in a scientific laboratory the present paper describes the process of empirical inquiry in terms of a model of research production rather than in terms of the language of truth and hypothesis testing . in accordance with this model, the scientific agents are related to a field which is the locus of a struggle for symbolic credit and to an investment site (the laboratory) through which the process is situated in time and space. epistemologically, research production is seen as an indexical process of constructive tinkering rather than as descriptive and 'rational'. investment and negating regulation through the scriptures of a field are held to characterize this process. some questions on the historicity of science as derived from this process are outlined for further discussion.;
