Abstract or Table of Contents

summary: the present paper analyses the well known phenomenon of "role perception". role perception is understood as the assignment of a set of activities to a set of roles by different persons. the examined population are nurses in austrian hospitals. a mathematical model is developed to explain the assignments of activities to roles and to detect possible role conflicts. the basic assumptions of the model are: (i) the existence of the latent formulation- prestige-dimension on which roles and activities are represented; (ii) the probability, that a person will assign a certain activity to a determined role is an exclusive function of the euklidian distance between this role and this activity on the latent continuum; (iii) this probabilitystands in exponential relation to this distance, where by the assignment-probability becomes one, if the distance approaches zero, and zero, if the distance tends to infinity. the parameter of the model are estimated by a maximum-likelihood-method. the goodness of fit of the model to the data maintains the hypotheses. furthermore statements about the clearness of role perceptions in different populations and about conflicts in role perception could be made.;
